Waxahachie

Setting out for Galveston the next morning, and browsing through the Texas tour book, I noticed that 20% of the buildings on the National Register of Historic Places were in the small town of Waxahachie which was just a few miles south of Dallas on I45.

Waxahachie was birthplace of Tom Blasingame, considered the oldest cowboy in the history of the American West, and also golf legend Byron Nelson. The movies Tender Mercies (Robert Duvall) and Places In The Heart (Sally Field) and the TV series Walker, Texas Ranger (Chuck Norris) were all filmed here.

The Ellis County Courthouse was named after Robert Ellis, who interestingly, had no connection to the county but was President of the Convention in 1836 that declared Texas's independence of Mexico.
