Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'...........
After a quick stop for BBQ pit beef, we continued on past Houston to Galveston, a coastal city located on Galveston Island. Galveston became a major U.S. commercial center and one of the largest ports in the United States. In 1900 the island was struck by a devastating hurricane. Even post-Hurricane Katrina, this event holds the record as the country's deadliest natural disaster. The city was devastated and an estimated 6,000-8,000 people were killed.
Jack Johnson, the first black world heavyweight boxing champion, was born in Galveston and it was also the domain of pirate and 1812 war hero Jean Lafitte.
