Farther down Interstate 45, I read about a 66 foot tall statue of Sam Houston near the town of Huntsville.
Houston was a key figure in the history of Texas, serving as 1st and 3rd President of the Republic of Texas, Senator for Texas after it joined the United States and finally as governor. Houston refused to swear loyalty to the Confederacy when Texas seceded from the Union, and instead retired to Huntsville where he died before the end of the Civil War.
