Next up was the Kansas Museum of History. It featured areas devoted to Native American History, the settling of Kansas, the battles over Kansas statehood, the Civil War, and African-American history.
The main gallery featured a Cheyenne tipi and Wichita grass lodge, a covered wagon fully stocked and ready for a trip on the Oregon Trail, an 1880 Atchison-Topeka & Sante Fe railroad locomotive (which was moved by flatbed to the museum site while it was under construction), 6 flags from the First and Second Colored Infantries, a 1950's diner, and a 1914 bi-plane.
Kansas has been the home or original location of many restaurant chains, including White Castle and Applebee's, which also have exhibits in the museum.
At the museum entrance is a striking sculpture of an Indian and a white buffalo. White buffalo were sacred to the Plains Indians and hides of these rare animals were thought to bring great power to their owners. The sculpture is by internationally known artist Lumen Martin Winter.
