Monday night I went to the Webster House to have dinner with Paula's sons, Jamie & Bobby Deen.
The Webster House, located in Kansas City's Crossroads District (and across the street from the new Kauffman Center for the Arts), is a restored former schoolhouse built in 1885 in the striking Romanesque Revival style. It is believed to be the oldest Kansas City public school structure and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The school closed in 1932 when the area became totally commercial. In 2002 this building became the home of Webster Antiques and Webster Restaurant.
Monday night's dinner featured Charred Tomato Salad with Peppers and Onions, Big Fat Garlicky Rib Eye, Sweet Potato Coins with Creamy Honey Drizzle, Lemon-Basil Green Bean Almondine, and Fired Up S'More bars. Jamie and Bobby then met the dinner guests, took photos, and autographed cookbooks.
I had to mention to Bobby and Jamie that my idea of "cooking" would be to sit in the kitchen with a glass of Chardonnay and watch them cook, to which they replied, "Well, there's nothing wrong with that!"
