The Calhoun Mansion, the largest privately owned home in Charleston, and featured on A&E's America's Castles, is a remarkable 24,000 sq foot house, built in 1876 and widely acclaimed as one of the greatest post-Civil War houses on the Eastern Seaboard. The home was built by George Walton Williams for $240,000, $40,00 of that for the lot. It was named for John Calhoun's grandson, who married Mr. Williams's daughter.
Today the home is owned by an international litigator, and is filled (and I mean filled) with antiques and oddities, such as elephant feet footstools.
Parts of the film The Notebook were filmed there.
