The oldest African-American congregation in America, the First African Baptist Church, once served as a key stop on the Underground Railroad. While not officially recognized until 1788, it grew from members who founded the church in 1773. That claim of "first" is contested by the First Baptist Church of Petersburg, Virginia, whose congregation organized in 1774.
