Bonaventure Cemetery, comprising nearly 160 acres, is the largest of the city's municipal cemeteries, and is located on a bluff overlooking the Wilmington River. The cemetery became famous when it was featured in the novel and movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The cover photograph of the book featured a sculpture of an evocative young girl, known as the Bird Girl, which had been virtually unnoticed in the cemetery for over 50 years. After the publication of the book, the statue was donated to the Telfair Museum of Art, to avoid disturbances by visitors to the cemetery.
