On Wednesday night I went to the Highline Ballroom to see bassist Victor Wooten. Victor is a composer, author, vocalist, lecturer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist. Known for his solo recordings and tours, and as a member of the Grammy winning super group Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Victor has won most every award given to a bass guitarist, including being voted bass player of the year by Bass Player Magazine. He is the only person to have won the award more than once.
The youngest sibling of the 5 Wooten brothers, Victor began playing at age 2 when his 10 year old brother, Regi, showed him how to play the bass in order to complete their family band. At age 6 Victor was touring with his brothers as the opening band for the soul legend Curtis Mayfield.
Victor's skills and popularity led to recordings and performances with Prince, Chick Corea, Dave Matthews, Mike Stern, Branford Marsalis and Jaco Pastorius.
