Saturday morning I took the subway from Christopher to 34th Street and crossed 7th Avenue to Madison Square Garden and bought a ticket for the 11:00 hour long tour. This complex is also known as MSG or simply The Garden. Madison Square Garden is the 3rd busiest arena in the world in terms of ticket sales.
The first stop was the 5,600 seat WaMu Theater which holds concerts, plays, boxing matches and the NBA draft. On the ceiling is a zigzag arrangement of 5,600 lights. Directly above the theater is the floor of the arena, which is home to the New York Rangers hockey team, the New York Knicks basketball team and the New York Liberty women's basketball team. Also held at the arena are the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the Barnum and Bailey circus and the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. Seating in The Garden is on 6 levels and the capacity is approximately 20,000 depending on the event. Below the theater is Penn Station. MSG was the first of its kind to be built above an active railroad system.
The record for concert appearances is 12 consecutive nights by Bruce Springsteen and 60 total concerts by Elton John.
In 1991 The Garden was renovated and 89 suites were added for a cost of $200 million.
