As part of the George Wein Care Fusion Jazz Fest, a birthday celebration for the legendary pianist Herbie Hancock was held at Carnegie Hall Thursday night. For seven decades, Mr. Hancock has been a huge part of the music scene, and in numerous genres including jazz, electronica and pop. Mr. Hancock's latest release is the Imagine Project, a genre defying template of artists, vocalists, instrumentalists, lyricists and poets unified by the phrase "Imagine a world..."
Introduced by Bill Cosby, Mr. Hancock was joined onstage by jazz legends Jack DeJohnette, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Terence Blanchard, Wallace Roney, Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland.
The second half of the concert featured selections from the Imagine Project, with a back-up band including drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes and guitarist Lionel Loueke. Mr. Hancock was joined by special guests vocalist/violinist Kristina Train, vocalist India.Arie, guitarist Derek Trucks and vocalist Susan Tedeschi.
