Memphis, on the Mississippi River, was founded in 1819 by John Overton, Andrew Jackson, and James Winchester. The city was named after the ancient Egyptian city on the Nile River. Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861 and Memphis became a Confederate stronghold. Union forces captured the city in 1862 and the city remained under Union control for the duration of the war.
Many famous musicians grew up in and around Memphis, including Elvis Presley, BB King, Muddy Waters, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, king of the Delta blues Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, Isaac Hayes, and Al Green.
The tour included St. Jude Children's Research Hospital founded by Danny Thomas, historic Beale Street, the Pyramid, the Peabody Hotel, Sun Record Studio, Graceland, and the Lorraine Hotel.
