Saturday night, after dinner at Monte's Trattoria, I went to see 87 year old Belgian harmonica player Toots Thielemans at the Blue Note in Greenwich Village. Thielemans started his career as a guitar player with Miles Davis, Sidney Bechet, Max Roach and Charlie Parker and also toured with Benny Goodman. He can be heard on the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack and also the Sesame Street theme song. Joining Mr. Thielemans were Kenny Werner on piano, Airto on drums and the amazing Oscar Castro-Neves on guitar. Some of the evening's musical selections were from Antonio Carlos Jobim and Ivan Lins.
