By taking a wrong turn on the way to Fort McHenry, I "accidentally" discovered the American Visionary Art Museum. Built in the Federal Hill neighborhood on the site of a former copper paint factory and whiskey warehouse, it was designated by Congress as America's museum for self-taught art. The museum, which opened in 1995, has a permanent collection of only 4,000 pieces. Its exterior, however, is unique and magnificent.
