Located about 2 miles north of the Capitol in historic Oak Ridge Cemetery, is an impressive monument containing Lincoln's tomb and the crypts in which Mrs. Lincoln and 3 of their four boys are buried. (the 4th son, Robert, is buried in Arlington Cemetery) Statuettes depict Lincoln during his career, and bronze tablets bear the text of the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln's farewell speech in Springfield, and his second inaugural address.Lincoln's Tomb was designated one of the first National Historic Landmarks in 1960 and thus became one of the first National Historic Places in 1966 when that designation was created.
Lincoln's burial vault is located 30 inches behind and 10 feet below the 7 ton reddish granite block inside the tomb.
The nose on the large bronze Lincoln head at the base of the tomb is kept polished by the thousands of visitors who rub it for good luck.
Oak Ridge is the 2nd most visited cemetery in the country, after Arlington National Cemetery.
