Kansas City is known as the city of fountains. No other city in the world has more, except for Rome, Italy. Some of Kansas City's 200+ fountains are over 300 years old.
The first fountains were erected over springs to provide clean drinking water for horses.
The city's most photographed fountain is the J. C. Nichols Memorial Fountain located n the Country Club Plaza. Nichols was a prominent real estate developer in the area.
One of the oldest fountains, dedicated in 1925, is the Meyer Circle Sea Horse Fountain, located on a traffic circle on two of Kansas City's grand old boulevards, Meyer Boulevard and Ward Parkway.
Another fountain pictured above is the Children's Fountain. Designed by Tom Corbin, it depicts five local children - a girl ballerina, a boy playing soccer, a girl with pigtails wading, a boy standing on his hands, and a boy using crutches called Meeting Challenges, and a girl named Joy. The Children's Fountain is one if the most recent (1995) and largest of all Kansas City fountains. Unfortunately, the day I was there to take photos, the water was turned off.
