Robert A. Long's expanding operations and need for larger office space led to the construction of Beaux-Arts style R. A. Long building in 1907. This was the first all-steel framed building in Kansas City with 16 stories and over 600 offices. Mr. Long's office was on the 8th floor. The building, at 928 Grand, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
In 1934 the City National Bank & Trust Company opened their offices on the 1st floor and then purchased the building in 1947. Now named UMB, in 2000 they began major renovations of the building, but the 8th and 14th floors were designated historic preservation floors and were restored as close to historic specifications as possible. When removing the ceiling tiles and fluorescent lights in Mr. Long's office, mahogany beams were discovered. In between the beams were hand-painted murals! Also some stained glass windows had been completely covered over with drywall.
