Tonight I attended a local theater company production of the musical Carousel at the Living Room in Kansas City, MO
The writing and the music stayed the same, but Kyle Hatley put his own spin on the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical. The setting shifted from Budapest to coastal Maine, a world of small dreams. Simple costumes, limited theatrical lighting, and a few tables and chairs for props was all that was needed for the performance which took place upstairs at the Living Room. The most dramatic effects came from multiple suspended lightbulbs with pull chains which the actors used in creative ways throughout the show.
Carousel is the ill-fated love story of Billy Bigelow, a carnival barker, and mill worker Julie Jordan. It includes the great musical numbers If I Loved You, June Is Bustin' Out All Over, and You'll Never Walk Alone.
