Sunday evening I attended a concert featuring jazz pianist Peter Martin at Sheldon Hall. Peter was raised in St. Louis and began studying piano at age three. After graduating from high school, he received the Presidential Scholar in the Arts from President Reagan. He then attended Julliard in NYC on scholarship. Peter has toured and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride, and Roy Hargrove. Peter has performed on 6 continents and in over 50 countries.
Joining Peter was Greg Hutchinson on drums. Jazz Magazine described Greg as the "drummer of his generation." Greg began playing at age 3 and has worked with Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves, Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, and Harry Connick, Jr.
On bass was Reuben Rogers from the Virgin Islands. At age 14 he found his passion for the bass over clarinet, piano, drums, and guitar. Reuben has played with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, and others. He has recorded on over 70 cds.
Peter's special guest was Warren Wolf, a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore, Maryland. Warren has trained on the piano and drums, but his instrument of choice is the vibraphone. After graduating from Baltimore's Peabody Institute of Music, Warren attended and graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston. Warren has played with a "who's who" list of musicians in the jazz world and has released several recordings as a leader, including Warren "Chano Pozo" Wolf where he plays the vibes, drums, Fender Rhodes, and piano.
A treat for the Sheldon audience was when Peter and Warren switched instruments; Warren on piano and Peter on vibes.
