Karrin Allyson, 3 time Grammy nominee, jazz vocalist, composer and pianist, performed in a "homecoming" concert at the historic Folly Theater in Kansas City. This was Karrin's first headline appearance at the Folly.
Karrin's performance included songs from her 13th album on Concord Jazz "Round Midnight," including selections by Charlie Chaplin, Thelonius Monk and Paul Simon.
Joining Karrin were Gerald Spaits on bass, a native of Kansas City, Rod Fleeman, one of Kansas City's noted jazz guitarists, Steve Nelson on vibraphone, and New York City's Matt Wilson on drums. Matt is one of today's most celebrated jazz artists.
Karrin and Steve Irwin, the Foll's development director, gave a pre-concert interview where she spoke of her start in Kansas City at the Phoenix, her album-making process, singing in different languages (especially Portuguese and French), the added pressure of being her own piano player, and her musical influences.
