Thursday night, on what would have been the 85th birthday of jazz trumpet great Miles Davis, I went downtown to Crossroads Station to see a tribute concert by KC trumpeter Hermon Mehari.
Hermon, who I had previously seen with the KC Sound Collective at Jardine's, gathered a number of his musical friends and performed many of Miles's classics including So What, Freddie Feeeloader, Darn That Dream, Nefertiti, 'Round Midnight, Human Nature, Boplicity, and Solea.
The first half of the program (50's and 60's era) was performed with the musicians in suits, but the second half (the 80's and 90's electronic and fusion era) was performed in street dress and shades. Nice touch.
