After a thoroughly enjoyable Broadway musical Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, and a great (but noisy restaurant) Italian dinner at Scarlotto's on 47th, I headed to the subway 1 line to Houston Street and then a short walk to City Winery on Varick to see guitarist/singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin.
Born in Vermillion, South Dakota and raised in Carbondale, Illinois, Shawn began playing guitar at age 10 and gave her first concert at age 15. Influenced by Joni Mitchell, Colvin began working in the music scene in earnest in the early 1970's. She sang backup for the Suzanne Vega hit "Luka." Vega returned the favor by singing backup on "Diamond In The Rough" from Colvin's debut album Steady On. Colvin's breakthrough success came with Sunny Came Home, which won the Grammy for best song and record of the year in 1996. She was also the guest artist on Lisa Loeb's single "Falling In Love." Her music partner, John Leventhal, became her producer on several albums.
