Wednesday's trip to New York City began with three time Tony Award winner Frank Langella starring in Man And Boy on Broadway. Langella played Gregor Antonescu, a ruthless financier whose business, at the height of the Great Depression, was beginning to crumble. In order to escape the wolves at his door, Antonescu tracked down his estranged son, a poor saloon piano player in Greenwich Village, in the hopes of using his son's apartment as a base to make a company-saving deal. Was this corrupt father just using his only son as a pawn in one last power play, or would they reconcile? This was a gripping story about success and family, and what people are willing to sacrifice for both. Although set during the Depression, with the chaos of today's unstable financial markets, the play took on a new relevance.
Man And Boy also starred Michael Siberry as Antonescu's loyal emissary and Adam Driver as Basil Anthony (Vasily Antonescu).
Three years ago I had the privilege of seeing Frank Langella as Richard Nixon in the amazing play Frost/Nixon. His first book, a memoir titled Dropped Names, will be published in March 2012.
