After my Broadway show, I walked down 8th Street to the subway at 42nd and took the train to W 4th Street, and then walked 2 blocks south to Volare for an Italian dinner (and glass of wine). Delicioso!
I walked over to the Blue Note to see Grammy and Emmy award winning pianist Michel Camilo who, with his trio members and long time friends Giovanni Hidalgo on conga and percussion and Charles Flores on bass, was celebrating the New York release of his new album Mano a Mano, which is made up of 8 originals and 3 standards.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Camilo, at the age of 16, became a member of its National Symphony Orchestra. He moved to New York in 1979 where he studied at Julliard. Six years later he released his debut album, made his Carnegie Hall debut and toured Europe. Today, Camilo often appears as a soloist with numerous prominent symphony orchestras performing classical repertoire and his own compositions.
