The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village is a glimpse of Sanibel from the 1880's, when it was settled by farmers, through the 1940's. Nine buildings sit on the village property:
1. The Rutland House - a pioneer home with 1900's furnishing
2. Bailey's General Store - "if they didn't have it here, you didn't need it"
3. 1926 Post Office
4. The Bailey's Garage - with a 1926 Model-T truck parked inside
5. The Old Sanibel Schoolhouse - "for white children," with its original bell
6. Morning Glories Cottage - A Sears Roebuck catalog kit home from 1924
7. Miss Charlotte's Tea Room - built for use as a gas station, then had a brief service as a store
8. Burnap Cottage - originally a 2 room fishing camp built in 1898
9. Packing House - where vegetables, produce, and citrus were stored for shipment "upnorth"
The buildings were moved from their original island locations and fully restored by a group of island volunteers known as the "Hammerheads." Each building showcases unique displays and exhibits depicting life on the islands as experienced by the pioneer families who settled there. The buildings are listed on the city of Sanibel's Historical Register.
