I arrived in the Big Apple on Saturday, October 30 and walked from the bus stop on 28th and 7th to 42nd Street, and then headed east toward 1st, the last street before the East River. I found that the United Nations entrance was actually on 46th. I also discovered there were only self-guided tours on the weekends so I saved that for another time and just explored on my own.
The United Nations, or UN, was created in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries and to provide a platform for dialogue. Its aim is to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace. The current Secretary General (since 2007) is Ban Ki-moon of South Korea.
