Cumberland, MD, was a key canal, road, and railroad junction and was once the 2nd largest city in Maryland. It was named after the son of King George II, Prince William, the Duke of Cumberland. It was built on the site of the old Fort Cumberland, and it was also the site of George Washington's first military headquarters.
