Wednesday, July 21st, I took the bus into NYC to see a Broadway play, have dinner, and go to a concert.
RACE, starring Dennis Haysbert, Eddie Izzard, Richard Thomas and Afton C. Williamson, was playing at the Barrymore Theater at 243 W. 47th Street. The Ethel Barrymore Theater opened on December 20, 1928 with The Kingdom Of God, a play selected by the leading lady herself. It is the only surviving theater of the many the Schuberts built for performers who were affiliated with them. Also it has been used continuously as a legitimate house, unlike many of the older theaters that have been used for a variety of purposes throughout the years.
RACE, written by David Mamet, tackles America's most controversial topic in a provocative tale of sex, guilt and bold accusations. Two lawyers (Eddie Izzard and Dennis Haysbert) find themselves defending a wealthy white executive (Richard Thomas) charged with raping a black woman. When a new legal assistant (Afton C. Williamson) gets involved in the case, the opinions that boil beneath explode to the surface.
