The final element of the National Gallery of Art complex is the 6.1 acre Sculpture Garden which was completed in 1999 after more than 30 years of planning. Located to the west of the West Building across 7th Street, the Sculpture Garden was designed by Laurie Olin as an outdoor gallery for monumental modern sculpture and includes plantings of native American species of canopy trees, flowering trees, shrubs, perennials and ground covers. A circular reflecting pool and fountain form the center of its design with pathways of crushed stone. The pool is transformed into an ice rink in the winter. The exhibited sculptures and surrounding landscaped areas include pieces by Alexander Calder, George Rickey, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg.
