A few blocks south of the Madison Square Park/Flatiron Building area is Union Square. Union Square is a historic intersection in NYC, located where Broadway and the former Bowery Road (now 4th Avenue) came together in the early 19th century. Its name denotes the fact that "here was the union of the two principal thoroughfares of the island." Statues in the park include George Washington, Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln and the Marquis de Lafayette. The park is bordered on the south by a building which features a kinetic wall sculpture and digital clock expelling bursts of steam titled Metronome. Mondays and Fridays feature a farmers' market in the square.
