For 200 years (1809) this venerable and beautiful church has served the diocese of New York and became known as the "old" cathedral in 1879 with the opening of the larger and more grand edifice at 51st Street and 5th Avenue. Meanwhile, the old cathedral sits on Mulberry Street, in a community which has been known as Little Italy, NOLITA (North Little Italy) and more recently SoHo. The cathedral was one of the first sites to be named a New York City landmark.
