On Friday, August 15, I headed up to Tawas State Park where I would spend a week camping on Lake Huron. My sister and brother-in-law and their 25 foot trailer came with me.
After setting up camp, I explored the State Park and the Tawas Point Lighthouse. In 1850 Congress appropriated $5,000 for the construction of a lighthouse which was begun in 1852 and commissioned a year later. Almost immediately problems were encountered. Shifting sands caused the point to be extended by nearly a mile, rendering the lighthouse useless, in addition to the actual structure failing. A new lighthouse was built in 1870 at a cost of $30,000.
The tower is 70 feet tall and is now available for tours. Because of its picturesque form and location, the Tawas Point Lighthouse is often the subject of photographs.
