Anyone who plans and holds a rummage sale knows the work involved. What's amazing is the amount of $$ you get for things that just take up space in your house that you rarely or never use. So after holding my sale on the holiday weekends of Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, with a few odd weekends between, the "summer sale" is now over. What's even more amazing is the amount of "stuff" left over when the sale is done. What happens to that? Nineteen boxes of children's, women's and men's clothing were taken to the local Good Samaritan Rescue Mission, boxes of books were taken to the library and boxes were donated to the Medical Care Facility. These last boxes contained artwork for the patients' rooms and seasonal decorations for the hallways and common areas. The mission, library and medical care facility were so happy to receive these donations that it made me wish I had thousands of dollars available to just hand over to them. And it left a funny feeling knowing I had so much needless stuff and they were struggling to provide.
So now the final prep begins in the 18 days remaining. Last night I cleaned out all kitchen cupboards, washed them down and used Scott's Liquid Gold on the door faces, washed all the apartment windows and emptied my file cabinet. My important papers to "have with me" are in one manilla envelope.
This process has been liberating and eye-opening and I suggest everyone try it, even if you're not moving. You'll shake your head and be amazed at what you have, and more important, what you do not need.
