Wednesday night in NYC I saw one of the best Broadways shows of the year - The Scottsboro Boys - at the Lyceum Theatre on W 45th Street. The Lyceum has the distinction of being the oldest surviving Broadway venue, the oldest continuing operating legitimate theater in New York City, and the first Broadway theater ever to be granted landmark status (in 1974). It opened on November 2, 1903. The Lyceum maintains most of its original Beaux-Arts design, including its marble staircases. Seating only 950, it is one of the smallest Broadway theaters.
The Scottsboro Boys is the final collaboration by musical theater giants John Kander and Fred Ebb, who also brought Cabaret and Chicago to the stage. This critically acclaimed production is based on the notorious Scottsboro case in the 1930's in which 9 African American men, aged 13 to 18, were unjustly accused of raping 2 white women. The brilliantly original and entertaining musical explores a fascinating chapter in American history.
